Monday 27th June

A windy morning that was turning wet must have put a dampner on even our hardy regulars today. I had another go at getting those angles right for the gunwale blocks to fit into the stern stem. At one frustrating point it seemed as if I was going further away from getting a nice tight fit with every adjustment with sandpaper and chisel I made. In the end I had to let go and rely on the glue to fill the gaps.

The stern gunwale blocks are now close enough to glue.

Lesley came in and got on with filleting the inside laps in the bow of boat 1 and did some sanding of earlier fillets too. Kay brought in a tray of scones and caramel cake slices and then Geoff added to the sugar quota with some funny face shortbread biscuits for morning tea. There was quite a bit left over for tomorrow’s volunteers.

Not just a Funny Face!

Geoff took the clamps off plank 3 on boat 2 and cleaned up the excess glue on them. Then we both took over from Lesley in the filleting game as she had to go and don her St John Ambulance attire for an afternoon shift. By the end of a messy session sticking goop into cracks we cleaned up and called it a day.

Bow fillets completed

Boat 2 is taking shape and I urge any of you who have been sitting on the sidelines to come in and have a go before it’s over. There are lots of us who can pass on the minimal skills required and get you started.

Boat 2 looking boaty.

On Friday I picked up our new banner from Denmark Signworks and I think they have done a great job. Come to the AGM next Monday and get a closer look.

New banner. Watch out for our advert thanking our sponsors in the Bulletin this week.

Cheers Dave
