Tuesday 21 June

Winter solstice is a time when a lot of Denmark’s residents have headed off north to warmer regions leaving behind the hardy few. The hardy few turned up to work on the boats today, myself, JP and Adrian. We removed the clamps on plank 2 and we were pleased with the result. Adrian picked up his trusty rabbet plane and planed the lands for the next plank while JP planed the bevels on the ends of plank 3.

I was back to fitting the end blocks to the gunwale of boat 1. The bow blocks were just about ready but the stern ones needed more work. Then I tried creating the filler wedge to fill the gap at the end of the first gunwale laminate and the stern stem. This proved to be frustrating in that there are a lot of angles to get right and then there is the hard glue in the slot to remove or carve the wedge around. It took me a couple of hours to get a fit I was happy with.

We stopped for morning tea just after Lesley had been in to deliver some delicious home made florentines. We were spoilt today as JB had made a strawberry yoghurt cake. She also made a brief visit to see how we were getting on.

Spoilt for choice at morning tea.

Towards the end of the day JP had the scarfs for plank 4 set up for glueing despite this plank 4 missing a crucial location hole in the aft sections. Another job for the CNC programmer. Luckily this plank has a steady curve which is easy to line up. I helped clamp the glued planks into place and then put some glue on my first wedge and the forward blocks and clamped them into place. I meant to take a picture of them but got busy cleaning up.

We’ll be glueing on plank 3 on Thursday and putting a bit more effort into boat 1. Hope to see you there.

Cheers Dave
