I was late due to what I thought was an emergency dash to the Little IGA for cake but in the end nobody wanted to open it preferring the biscuits at break time. Adrian, JP and Nick had the shed open and were examining the results of yesterday’s glueing. Not bad! Nick and Adrian set about cleaning up the glueing table and setting up to glue the other two frames. JP and I unpacked the wood for the keelson or as our American friends call it, the hog. It’s the inside half of the keel in the boat. We were a bit surprised that the keelson had to be made up of two laminates one narrower than the other and both needing a scarph joint to get them to the desired length. We were just starting the scarphing process when Harry and a fellow Men’s Shed member called Roger appeared from Harry’s other shed, the one with all the woodworking toys. I had started to ineffectually use my plane then my Japanese pull saw to cut the scarph joint. JP took off first to get sanding discs for the angle grinder, then Roger went home for an assortment of better planes and Harry went up to his shed for an electric plane. When we regrouped Roger showed us how it was done with the electric plane and his long plane then I had a go doing it on the second scarph joint and got a satisfactory result.

Tea break was on the go as we mixed up an 8-4 cup of resin to wet the entire plank as we had decided to go for broke and clamp it all up in one go. On went 4 healthy table spoons of goop and we were ready.

Spreading the glue
Clamping up on the scarph joint
More clamping
And relax its over!

Visitors today were down to one man and his dog. Duncan promised to come back on another day without Charlie and get stuck in.

See you on Thursday when hopefully we will have more glue for more laminating.

Cheers Dave
