Monday 17 October

Mark was already in the shed when I got there this morning. His first job was to tidy up the outer gunwale battens and then to use the router to bevel the outer edges.

Dr John returned from his holidays in the Queensland rainforest. He and Paul W finished fitting the top sections of the boat frames.

Paul also sanded the beams getting them ready to be glued in.

Mark moved onto belt sanding the inner gunwale.

I sanded the bung ends that we filled with epoxy. They will now present a flat face on the outside of the hull.

Getting there.

Geoff had been inside boat 2 sanding the fillets along the frames. He also brought in mini muffins for morning tea. He had to leave in a hurry to help Joy, we hope she’s OK.

I went to see Denmark Signwriters about their proof for the name and logo transfers for the boats and checked on JP who was working in Pete’s yard.

When I got back Veronica joined me for the second shift while the others had left. Veronica got straight into shaping the breasthooks, something she had also been doing over the weekend (this creative work is addictive).

Breasthooks nearly complete.

I used the router to bevel the edges of the inner gunwale and for the first time the inside of the gunwale holes between the blocks, it worked well. I also sanded the gunwale with the orbital sander to get it 80% ready to varnish. Later I mixed up some glue to glue the frame ends in place.

Frame ends in place.

Tomorrow we are turning over boat 1 again so that we can finish the varnishing and fit the bungs. If you would like to help we are doing it at morning tea time (10.30am).

Cheers Dave
