Friday 9 September
Another extra day in the shed for JP and I. We have set ourselves the task of having boat 1 weather proof for next Saturday so that we can display her at the Supa IGA during our sausage sizzle and raffle there in the morning. I want to have 3 coats of resin on and at least two coats of varnish on the gunwales so we are squeezing in extra time away from home.
We started by using wet and dry and warm water on the previous day’s resin coat which wasn’t too arduous and then sanded the rudder and a floorboard for coating before having a cup of tea.
Mike from the Wood Turners Group turned up with the jarrah thole pins that they had turned for us with the hollow tops to take the metal rowlock pins and gates. They look as if they will do the job well once the tapering holes in the gunwales have been formed with epoxy and the metal threads are glued into the top of the thole pins. They will then be easily interchangeable with real wooden thole pins for St Ayles Skiff compliant competition rowing.

Other visitors included JD and we swapped oil rig histories from the early 80’s when we were both working on them. I had to dig deep to remember the names of the rigs like the Energy Searcher. Veronica also came in with raffle prize gifts from her and Lesley.

We’re going to have the weekend off now as I think we have done enough to get the job done next week.
Cheers Dave
