Monday 29 August

We welcomed back Mark from his long drive to Sydney first thing this morning. Boat 2 was shining in its third epoxy coat which Veronica and I had applied on Friday.

Ready to roll Tuesday 30 August at 11.30.

Woodwork was the order of the day. JP took his rowlock plates up to Harry’s other shed to sand on Harry’s drum sander. Later he brought the whole thing down to our workshop which was then used by all of us. Mark set up the router to bevel the edges of the thwarts; top edges with a 12mm quarter round cutter and bottom edges with a 6mm cutter.

Paul came in to finish the seat supports, sawing, chiseling and sanding to make them fit.

Veronica came in not dressed for work with a visitor, Lew, who she had mentioned several times, is a metal worker who is interested in being involved. After discussing drain plugs that we can buy relatively cheaply we moved on to JP’s idea of making metal thole pins. These will mimmic wooden 28mm thole pins but will have a threaded hollow top section for standard 12mm metal and plastic rowlocks to screw into and go with our donated carbon fibre oars. We still want to build wooden oars in the near future. I drew up a rough plan for Lew to take away and think about. Veronica went home and changed and came back to finish shaping the breasthooks.

Geoff came in with the news that the Denmark Yacht Club are keen to support us on our launch day. He set to work sanding the thwarts and the rowlock plates.

I worked on the coxswain’s seat making supports and then creating a template for the seat.

Template needs a bit of adjustment tomorrow.
There was a bit of competition between Paul and I for sanding space on the drum sander.

It was a great morning in the shed, we had a couple of visitors, Les and Dick who seemed very interested and knowledgeable. Kay joined us for morning tea bringing with her a lovely date cake. Harry was enjoying helping out wherever he could. There was a real buzz and we are looking forward to firstly turning boat 2 over tomorrow and secondly finishing the woodwork on boat 1 very soon.

Buzzing with activity.
Don’t miss more cakes tomorrow.

Cheers Dave
