Monday 1 August
I was planning to go in early and set up a few jobs then leave because I have been snuffling around with a cold all weekend (Covid negative according to my pet RAT). Anyway when I had been fiddling around for a while I realised that I would be on my own today which although not ideal did mean I could stay and put some thought into preparing the keel timbers for scarfing and laminating and also mark up the stems for shaping.
Robert Ayliffe had supplied lengths of Hoop pine with the dimensions of 50×30 mm and 40×30 mm. I found that it was not possible to make the trapezoidal section on the plan which has a base of 50mm and a top of 30mm and a height of 70mm. The best we can do is a base of 50mm and a top of 30mm and a height of 60mm plus glue thickness. The same was done on boat 1.
I marked up the scarf joints to be planed using a 1:6 slope as there will be no real strength issues in the keel. I juggled the long pieces so that the scarfs didn’t line up and checked the overall length I would need and added a bit (5.5m) once the scarfs are glued. So here’s a job ready to go for tomorrow.
Geoff B dropped in but couldn’t stay. He picked up a couple of his clamps for a home building project. We had a chat about our affiliation proposal with the Riverside Club.
After a tea break I got out the outer stems which had been lurking at the back of the shed. I removed the braces but there didn’t seem to be any spring back. I then marked the centre line and lines 15mm out from the centre on the outside of the stems. On the stern stem the trapezoid section thickens two planks below the gunwale to 40mm on the outside so that the rudder fittings fit.
I had a chat with Harry from opposite ends of the shed and Kay dropped in with some eggs which was kind of her. Her younger chooks are apparently laying well despite the weather. I finished up by removing the clamps and the glue from them, from boat 1 gunwales. It looks solid now with a complete gunwale.
There is still plenty of sanding to do on both boats to keep you warm this week. I won’t be in tomorrow as I will be waiting on a Covid PCR test which I had as a precaution after I left the shed this afternoon. Hopefully some of you will be around tomorrow.
Cheers Dave
