Monday 23 May
Another slow start to the day. As I arrived Nick was leaving. It turned out he’d left his glasses at home and wouldn’t be able to work without them. I started by continuing to sand the frames of boat 2 to get them ready for fitting. I was soon warm doing it by hand when Harry encouraged me to use the belt and the orbital sanders on them. That certainly speeded up the process and soon we had them all ready for a little bit of epoxy filling where the glue joint hadn’t quite got enough glue.
JP made adjustments to the moulds. The second and third mould were lower by about 5mm from the rest of the moulds which had been noticed as we built boat 1. It only required a flat wood shim to be inserted between the mould and the building frame.
Meanwhile Nick unclamped the two parts of the hog/keelson we had glued on Thursday and cleaned up the excess epoxy. We workshopped how we were going to clamp them together to reduce the bow in the planks and after tea break with fruit cake, Nick and JP glued them and clamped them together with multiple clamps.
Tomorrow we’ll take the hog timber over to Pete Wilson’s shed to rip it down to 100mm and give it a straight edge on both sides. Then we’ll bring it back and begin shaping it to receive the garboard planks. We’ll also mark up and shape the inner stems. Of course there is plenty more work to do on boat 1 to get it ready for filleting.
Cheers Dave
