Monday 16 May

Car troubles found me walking in from the Denmark Mechanical Repairs garage this morning when Mark cycled up beside me. We were a little late and JP and Nick had opened up and discovered our gleaming hull was a bit tacky despite it curing over the cold and wet weekend. We gave it a good rub down and a light sand in preparation for the final coat. Kay brought her walking mates Kerry and Marie to inspect the work and they sounded impressed. JP and Mark cleaned up and pre-drilled the frames ready for glueing while I worked on the supports for the boat we will use when we have turned it over tomorrow. Harry came down and joined us for tea. He had to be helped down by Kay as he had had a nasty fall on his birthday. Apparently he wasn’t dancing on the table after a few drinks but much more mundanely getting up in the morning.

More visitors arrived, an old work colleague of mine, Geoff and his wife Laura asked lots of questions.

It was Nick’s birthday today and Sue had dropped in with some chocolates for him which were devoured fairly quickly at tea break. Then it was time to roll on the final coat of resin which Nick and Mark did while I followed with a brush to smooth out the surface.

Tomorrow is Turnover Day. Another milestone in building skiffs when we lift the boat off its moulds and put it the righty way up on the other side of the shed. We’ll have a good clean up in the morning and when the school students from Denmark Senior High School arrive we’ll make the final preparations and then turn it over at around 11.30. All welcome to come and watch.

Cheers Dave
