Tuesday 5th April

I left home in too much of a hurry and forgot my phone which was to prove a time wasting error. We were expecting the High School students later in the morning and so Adrian and I went about setting up things that might be of interest to them. It turned out that Cam texted me to say they were not going to make it as he was off sick. It was only at tea break when JP stuck his head in that we found out. No matter, Adrian and I had prepared one side of the skiff to land the next plank and set up the strings to line up planks (Port and Starboard) three. We test fitted the starboard side and it went on very easily as there isn’t so much twist in this plank or future ones. We took it off and prepared it for glueing the scarfs, again using the one plank on top of the other technique that we used last time.

I forgot to mention that in Plank 2 there was another two discrepancies in the position of the CNC cut holes through the scarfs. Both the forward and aft planks scarf locator holes had to be re-drilled 5mm closer to the nearest edge of these planks so that the plank edges lined up. Plank 3 was a dream – all holes were in the right place and the curve of the plank lined up beautifully. I think the CNC program could be easily adjusted to correct these errors.

We did have a couple of visitors, Dave Butler and Andy. They were suitably impressed with the progress and Dave said he would come back and help when his back wasn’t giving him so much pain. Dave has built another Iain Oughtred designed boat in Denmark.

Harry came in for tea and biscuits, to see how we were doing and brought in a bucket of his windfall avocados for us.

We’ll be able to glue on planks 3 on Thursday and start preparing planks 4.

Cheers Dave
