Mist and wood fire smoke hung over the town as I drove in. JP was there to greet me and we started by taking the clamps of our scarf jobs and enthusiastically using the heat gun to soften the epoxy and chisel it away while warming our fingers at the same time. JP was definitely regretting wearing Crocs and no socks this morning. John I and Dr John with Archie then joined us and although John I said he’d been having nightmares about shaping the rudder he went back to the task. I gave Dr John the job of covering up my mistakes in the gunwale by filling in the blanks below the rowlock plates between the blocks. His first move nearly had him chopping into a perfectly good block but luckily he caught himself before he did. We did not really have the appropriate 45x19mm batten to make the filler pieces so Dr John slipped off home for a piece of Meranti he had.

Paul W arrived in time to cut the end lands on plank 5 after sharpening his plane blade. Then Veronica came in and helped with fitting the planks and helped me. I was working on the gunwale batten that we scarfed on Tuesday, cutting down the bow end to get it to fit tightly. This involved a lot of clamping and unclamping the batten and cutting another slither off it at the required angle. With many interruptions I still did not finish it today.

I had brought my computer in so that Veronica could see the process for making breasthooks for each inner end of the boats. The Geoff Kerr video on Off Center Harbor “How to build a Caledonia Yawl Part 22” describes the process of measuring and fitting a breasthook in the same manner as we intend to in the skiffs. Veronica had donated a beautiful rough cut chunk of Sheoak which I know she will be able to shape and fit as a breasthooks.

Geoff Kerr’s breasthook in a Caledonia Yawl

At tea break we had a variety of biscuits and cakes on offer thanks to Paul W and JP and our one visitor for the day, Faye Lewis. She came in to let us know that a lady by the name of Sally Ward would be coming over from Scotland in early November to check out the St Ayles Skiffs of Australia. She is obviously a big fan of coastal rowing and is a member of the Nairn Coastal Rowing Club. She’ll be coming to Denmark just after we have (fingers crossed) launched our skiffs and will be able to share a few rowing tips with us I’m sure.

After tea break it was time to get gloved up and get glueing. However, Veronica was determined to get a better land at the stern for the Starboard plank. Paul W was helping until he cut himself with the chisel and then got a phone call to go home to receive guests. Glueing went well and as before I did the dive under the boat to clean up the internal squeeze out while JP and Veronica did the outside.

Way too much fun!

Boat Cave

I’m afraid I didn’t take any pictures today. There are a few takers and there is plenty to do.
