JP and Mark turned up as I was pulling out the keel timbers. Then there was a lot of head scratching as we couldn’t see how we could make two keels out of the timber Stray Dog Boatworks had sent us.

All of the keel timber for two skiffs

This couldn’t be right. It was difficult to see how we could get one keel out of these pieces. Robert Ayliffe came to our rescue and promised to send whatever we needed so we had another think. Luckily our outer stem ends extend a fair way along the keel and seeing as Iain Oughtred’s Caledonian Yawl has a short scarf onto the keel in reverse of the plans for a St Ayles Skiff, we decided to use just the two longer pieces. These needed to be glued up to remove the bends in the timbers.

In the meantime we got on with a bit of trimming of the stems to fit the outer stems using the electric plane and belt sander before refining the curve by hand sanding.

Fine tuning the stem fit.

We had a visit from Libby F to check on progress and on the Fleecy sizes we are having printed with our logo.
